13 years ago, Elfego Gomez Ramirez was hesitant to begin working at a nursing home after a friend of his encouraged him to get certified as a CNA. Elfego reluctantly took the advice, not knowing exactly what to expect.
His perspective quickly changed. “I found it to be very rewarding to be helping people with my work,” Elfego explained. He realized this most vividly when he was picking up some extra hours at another facility within the same senior living system.
As he was working one night, one of the residents, a woman who is blind, requested help to get changed. When Elfego showed up to help her, she asked him, “Are you Elfego?”
He wasn’t sure how she knew his name, and when he asked her, she said she recognized his voice. A few years ago, she was a resident at the facility Elfego worked at and she remembered how much she appreciated him and how he cared for her.
Elfego was stunned. He had made such an impact on this woman who couldn’t see, that she remembered his voice all these years later.
“It made me realize that I’m really doing something for these people,” Elfego recalled.
As director of housekeeping, Elfego goes above and beyond to serve the residents. His passion drives him to keep the place as clean as possible and to care for the patients through what has been an extremely trying season during the COVID-19 pandemic.
