Chantelle Thomas: How Mentorship and Teamwork Led to Non-Clinical Director of the Year
We're thrilled to celebrate Chantelle Thomas, Culinary Director at Carlsbad Medical Center in Carlsbad, NM, who was recently named Non-Clinical Director of the Year for her outstanding leadership and dedication!
An Unexpected Beginning
Chantelle's seven-year HHS journey began without fanfare. "Honestly, I was just looking for a job," she shares. "I didn't even know HHS was a contractor." Hired as an evening patient cook, she soon realized HHS offered a clear career path. "I saw the different positions and realized there was room to move ahead," she explains. "I just took hold and saw where I could go."
Initially a home cook, Chantelle embraced HHS' opportunities. She completed the Rouxbe program, honed her skills as a chef for two years, and then led a team in Nebraska as her first director role. When she returned to Carlsbad, it was as a Culinary Director.
A Passion for Mentoring
While Chantelle enjoys the chef position's creativity, her passions are teaching and mentoring. "I like guiding others and helping them realize there's a career path here," she says. "I enjoy pushing people to grow." Her leadership focuses on support and development. "If someone doesn't work out in a position," she explains, "I always look for where they can fit, where we can let them shine."
Chantelle prioritizes a positive work environment, emphasizing open communication, teamwork, and a drama-free kitchen. "I'm very against bullying," she emphasizes. "I try to get everyone to communicate and work together." She understands that a supported team is a productive team.
A Team Achievement
Receiving the Non-Clinical Director of the Year award is a significant milestone, validating Chantelle's dedication. "It shows me I am doing something right," she says. But for her, it's a team celebration. "I wish it were a team award," she emphasizes. "I can't do any of this without my team."
Chantelle’s success is a direct result of her team's hard work, and she hopes the award reminds them their efforts are truly valued. "It lets them know that, as a department, we are doing what we should be doing." She regularly recognizes their contributions, making a point to say, "Thank you for everything today." She acknowledges their achievements in huddles and celebrates successes. "It's about showing you appreciate them and that we wouldn't be successful without each person."
Overcoming Challenges and Growing as a Leader
Chantelle cites developing her management skills, particularly in communication and relationship building, as a key challenge. ”I had to learn to be vulnerable and communicate effectively.” she says, adding that self-reflection and learning from others have been essential in her growth.
Inspiring Others
Chantelle’s journey is a testament to the power of hard work, dedication, and mentoring others along the way. Her story continues to inspire us all at HHS, and we are incredibly proud of the remarkable achievements of both Chantelle and her team!
