Going Beyond the Hire: How Kenneth Ruffin Shapes Culture and Retention at HHS
Staffing is a challenge across many industries, but Kenneth Ruffin, Regional Healthcare Frontline Recruiter for all Bon Secours Mercy Health (BSMH) sites, is delivering results with his innovative approach.
Drawing from his nine years of military service and extensive HR experience, Kenneth goes beyond traditional recruiting methods, focusing on understanding and supporting the needs of both candidates and teams.
A Philosophy of Empowerment
“I believe in empowering people,” Kenneth says. “My goal is to give our leaders and managers the tools and support they need so their teams can thrive. It’s not just about filling jobs—it’s about creating a culture where people feel valued.”
Kenneth’s recruitment strategy centers on aligning candidates with HHS’s core values of care, respect, and teamwork. By recruiting for cultural fit, he helps foster smoother transitions and higher job satisfaction, which leads to improved retention.
Recruiting for Culture
Kenneth works closely with both leadership and frontline team members to understand their needs and dynamics. This hands-on approach helps spot any potential mismatches between new hires and the company culture early on, making sure recruits not only meet qualifications but also thrive on the team.
“Communication between management and team members is key,” Kenneth notes. “You can have great team members and strong leaders, but if they’re not talking, small issues can become big problems. I try to make sure that doesn’t happen.”
Going the Extra Mile
One initiative Kenneth introduced is a weekly newsletter highlighting team member achievements. Inspired by his time in the military, where respect and recognition were core values, this initiative celebrates contributions across all levels of the team.
He also began rounding with team members, even though it wasn’t a formal part of his role, allowing him to connect with team members and directly address their concerns. “I wanted to see what they were experiencing firsthand,” Kenneth explains. “It’s important to show that no matter your role, we’re all equal and in this together.”
Through these personal interactions, Kenneth builds trust and helps create an environment where team members feel appreciated and motivated.
Retention Through Relationships
Kenneth understands that keeping talent is just as crucial as recruiting. Building relationships is key to creating a positive work environment, and Kenneth’s approach has led to higher engagement and morale.
“Retention is about making people feel appreciated,” he says. “It’s the small things, like asking how their weekend was or recognizing their hard work. When people feel valued, they’re more likely to stay.”
He’s also brought fun into the workplace, celebrating birthdays and creating a “gold coin” incentive program where team members search for hidden coins around the facility to engage and motivate team members with weekly rewards.
Empowering Through Communication and a People-First Approach
Kenneth’s attitude and approach have delivered results leading to his new role as the frontline recruiter for all service lines throughout the Bon Secours ministry. To stay aligned with each department, Kenneth introduced weekly recruiting calls with leadership. These calls help quickly address issues, adjust strategies, and ensure recruitment efforts meet each department’s needs.
Kenneth’s commitment to being available —, whether early in the morning or late at night — makes sure teams have what they need to succeed. His dedication to clear and consistent communication helps keep things running smoothly and empowers both leaders and team members.
“I’ve been in their shoes,” Kenneth says. “I know what it takes to do these jobs and can bridge gaps so everyone feels valued.”
Looking Ahead
Recruiters like Kenneth play a vital role in shaping the company’s culture. Kenneth’s focus on communication, recognition, and a people-first approach exemplifies HHS’ commitment to building a positive, supportive workplace culture.
To other recruiters, Kenneth offers this advice: “Ask questions, over-communicate, and always be open to new ideas. Recruitment is more than just filling jobs—it’s about building a community where everyone feels valued and empowered.”
As HHS continues to expand, Kenneth’s approach ensures that people remain at the heart of the company’s success.
