A patient had nearly given up.
He was in ICU and was refusing to eat and drink. Days had gone by, and the nurses were getting worried.
Phlyicia Jones, who had just begun working as a housekeeper with HHS on June 30, heard about the situation and wanted to help. She got permission from the nurses to visit the patient and talk with him.
She approached him with grace, compassion, and a determination to help.
They talked. He shared his anxieties. She comforted him. And, eventually, he took a few sips of water.
The ICU nurses were thrilled. They asked Phylicia if she would come back and feed him his lunch — she did, and he ate it. Everyone was so excited to see the patient eating and drinking again, and the nurses thanked Phylicia for her help.
Phylicia displayed extraordinary compassion and care. Housekeepers like her are not only helping patients recover by keeping hospitals clean and safe, but also by being ready to provide the care and emotional support needed to truly heal.
