Five Simple Meal Prepping Tips

By Maddy Davis, RD

Meal prepping can seem like a chore and the idea of only eating the same things over and over again can make some people feel limited in their food choices. But that doesn’t have to be the case. Meal prepping doesn’t have to be difficult or monotonous! Following these tips and tricks can help you develop a meal prepping routine, while adding variety into your mealtime and snack options. Soon, you’ll be saving time while improving your overall health.

Make a plan

Write down a list of your favorite healthy foods and decide what you’ll eat for every snack and meal. Incorporate simple foods that can be made quickly or in bulk to help save time and provide you with options throughout the week. As you continue to practice this technique, it’ll become easier and you’ll be able to accomplish writing a plan quickly and efficiently.

Create a grocery list and stick to it

Don’t let junk food find its way into your shopping cart. Not having it in the house will mean not having to use your willpower to avoid it. Sticking to your list and minimizing impulse buys will also help you save money.

Keep it simple and implement time saving strategies

Not everyone likes the idea of prepping full meals ahead of time. Small strategies such as cooking a batch of rice, cooking a portion of a dish to be used later, or even portioning out ingredients for when you need them can help you better utilize your time. Assembling ingredients for freezer meals is excellent for the days when you’ve been busy and have little or no time to cook.

Get proper containers —  size does matter!

One of the easiest ways to make sure you are eating a proper amount of food without depriving yourself is by using portion control containers. You can mix and match foods in containers for variety without the possibility of overeating. Mindful eating can lead to a healthier lifestyle.

Mix it up and make it personal

Meal prepping should be guided by what actually works for you and your schedule. Prep things that you actually like because chances are if you don’t like what’s available then you probably won’t eat it. Some people get frustrated and think that they have to eat the same thing every day, but that’s hardly the case! Mix it up and have fun!
