HHS Earns A+ on Plant-Based Efforts from The Humane Society of the United States

HHS Earns High Marks on HSUS Protein Sustainability Scorecard

Dripping Springs, Texas (April 24, 2024) HHS is proud to announce that it has received an A+ and ranked third on The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)  Protein Sustainability Scorecard. This recognition highlights the company's commitment to offering climate-friendly, plant-based options within its retail operations.

The HSUS scorecard evaluates the efforts of major food service companies based on transparency, goals, and execution of action plans. In 2023, HHS reported that 36%—40% of planned menus were plant-based, with a daily average of 41%—60% plant-based entrée sales.

“Food service companies have a great responsibility to their customers and the planet, and the HSUS Protein Sustainability Scorecard is designed to celebrate those that prioritize this responsibility,” shares Karla Dumas, registered dietitian nutritionist and Vice President of Farm Animal Protein at the Humane Society of the United States. “HHS has shown year after year they are a leader in the industry. They have transparent goals and are implementing initiatives that involve less reliance on animal proteins while creating a diverse menu of choices that are good for the planet, animals, and their customers.”

HHS' success stems in part from its close collaboration with HSUS. Together, they developed the innovative plant-based concept "Sustainabowls" as an extension of the popular Global Bowls menu. This initiative and the company's Meatless Monday program launched in April 2021 and have seen significant growth in plant-based sales. The positive response has fueled the further development of plant-based menus and recipes, propelling HHS toward its ambitious sustainability goals.

“Partnering with The Humane Society of the United States has been instrumental in our mission to champion a plant-based, sustainable menu program,” shares Marta Hernandez, Vice President of Culinary at HHS. “Their support has fueled initiatives like Sustainabowls and Meatless Mondays, driving us towards increasing plant-based meals to represent 50% of our menu offerings by 2027.”

HHS has set ambitious goals for the future, including 50% meatless or plant-based retail menu offerings by 2027 and a goal to reduce animal protein purchases by 25% by 2030. To learn more about HHS' commitment to animal welfare, read HHS' Animal Welfare Policy.
